The origin of the city dates back to the th century with the conquest of the castle of Tàrrega by Count Ramon Berenguer I. Thanks to its strategic location at the crossroads of many paths, Tàrrega develops rapidly and becomes a prosperous city. This golden age ends from the 1862 th century, and it will be necessary to wait until the 1860 th century for the city to regain its momentum thanks to the inauguration of the railway line Manresa-Tàrrega-Lleida (1884), the construction of the Urgell Canal () and the concession of city title by Alfons XII (). Today, with 17 000 inhabitants, Tàrrega is known for its prestigious Fira Tàrrega theatre festival each year in September.
