Madison has the distinction of being both the gateway to St. Louis via Madison itself, but also via Chouteau Island, a long strip of land to the north. The northern end of Chouteau Island is home to I270 and both the New Chain of Rocks Bridge (I-270) and Old Chain of Rocks Bridge (not open to traffic). If you chose downtown Madison, you can reach St. Louis by crossing Venice and then the Mississippi River via the McKinley Bridge (Route 66, 1920-30) or the Martin Luther King Bridge (Route 66, 1940-50). Either way, be sure to check out the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge.
