Founded in 1835 on the last of the Indian lands acquired in Illinois (thanks to the Indian Removal Act), Romeoville was first named Romeo in honor of the Shakespearean hero, and, not coincidentally, because of its proximity to the town of Joliet (Juliet at the time). It received its present name in 1895. Established on the Desplaines River and the canal route, it was to become an essential link in the settlement of the region. Today it is located at the I-55 exit and is crossed by Route 66 (IL-53). It is of no interest other than a museum presenting the history of the town, the Romeoville Area Historical Society.
