Lyons, a southwest suburb of Chicago, was incorporated in 1888. Crossed by Route 66 (Ogden Avenue), it was here, in 1673, that French-Canadian explorer Louis Joliet and Father Jaques Marquette discovered, with the help of the Potawatomis, a portage for their boats to cross from the Chicago River to the Desplaines River via Mud Lake (since disappeared). This vast half-mile area of land, known as the Chicago Portage, became the "Gateway to the West" and led Chicago to become a world trade center. In Lyons, you can stop at the Hofmann Tower, a historic eight-story tower from 1908.
