Braidwood is a small community of about 5,000 people, whose livelihood is based on the employment and financial support provided by its nuclear power plant, located south of the town. The plant has two pressurized water reactors that were commissioned in 1987 and 1988 and were recently authorized to operate until 2046 and 2047. It provides electricity to the city of Chicago and northern Illinois. Braidwood has lost much of its vitality as a result of the slowdown in the operation of Route 66. Nevertheless, the Polk-a-Dot Drive in, an old roadside fixture, still attracts and welcomes passing customers.
