Just 15 km east of Gdańsk, the island of Sobieszewo makes a fine half-day excursion. Comprising two nature reserves, the "Bird Paradise"(Ptasj Raj) and the "Seagull Sandbank"(Mewia Łacha), it boasts beautiful, wide sandy beaches, preceded by verdant forests. A great place for walking and swimming, the area is very popular in summer for its natural, unspoilt beauty. To the south, the depression zone of the Vistula delta(Żuławy Wiślane) was once developed by Dutch settlers with polders below sea level. There are several canals, locks and movable bridges.
