Surprisingly, Kołobrzeg is one of Poland's oldest towns (dating back thirteen hundred years). In the year 1000, it was an influential bishopric, comparable to Krakow or Wrocław. A Pomeranian town, it became part of Poland in 972, before the Duchy of Pomerania emancipated itself and joined the Brandenburg fold. Razed several times, it was completely destroyed during the Second World War, and its reconstruction focused on seaside activities. Today, Kołobrzeg is more of a summer destination than a cultural one. The town is home to spas and thalassotherapy resorts, as well as a beautiful waterfront.
