Crossing the Strelasund arm of the sea between Stralsund and Rügen opens up a remote, maritime and Nordic world. With a surface area of 926 km², Rügen is Germany's largest island in the Baltic Sea. And it's considered the most beautiful. It is characterized by white cliffs and superb wild capes. Rügen is at the heart of German Romantic culture: in the 19th century, Caspar David Friedrich painted his famous chalk cliffs here. The fall of the Berlin Wall has attracted hordes of tourists. At weekends, especially in summer, the area is a hive of activity.
