Licheń is a major pilgrimage site, second only to Częstochowa in Poland. Its founding legend dates back to the Napoleonic Wars: during the Battle of Leipzig, a Polish soldier saved by an apparition of the Virgin promised to fetch her icon and place it in his native village. He kept his promise. In 1994, a new, ultra-modern sanctuary was built, the Basilica of Licheń, designed to accommodate up to 10,000 pilgrims and boasting Poland's tallest tower (141.5 m). A somewhat ostentatious ensemble that makes it the twelfth largest church in the world and a place to visit as emblematic as it is impressive.
