Neuzelle is a quiet little town in the Oder valley, home to one of the most beautiful abbeys in Brandenburg. Neuzelle Abbey displays baroque lines, shapes and colours, which are more reminiscent of Catholic Bavaria than Protestant Brandenburg. But Neuzelle, which historically belonged to Lower Lausitz and not to Brandenburg, had been a Saxon abbey since its foundation and therefore remained Catholic after the Protestant Reformation. It only became Prussian after the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and was the last secularised Cistercian parish on German soil. The small garden adjoining the abbey is full of charm
