Located some 100 km south of Berlin, the Spreewaldis divided in two by the river that gives it its name. On one side is the Unterspreewald and on the other the Oberspreewald, each of which is branched by numerous rivers and canals. You can kayak, pedal-boat or ride the local gondolas along the Fließe. Many Spreewald residents belong to the Sorbian minority. The Sorbs are a Slavic community of around 60,000 speakers, living mainly between Brandenburg and Saxony. You may also be familiar with Spreewald if you've seen the film Goodbye Lenin. To keep his mother's memories of the GDR alive, Alex reuses jars of Spreewald pickles. These pickles are the region's mascot.Lübbenau : This is the tourist center of Spreewald. It's also a lovely little town. It has a wide range of hotels and tourist facilities. Boats can easily be hired to explore the canals leading to the Spree. Lübbenau Castle houses a hotel.Lübben : Another Spreewald center, a little less charming than Lübbenau, but also a little less crowded, especially at weekends.Burg : Smaller still, Burg is a charming village in Spreewald, also known for its thermal baths.Schlepzig: Schlepzig is a charming little town with a few half-timbered facades and many red-brick buildings.
