The "City of Steelworks" is a pure product of industrialization in the GDR in the 1950s. A planned city, it is a unique example of socialist urban planning in Germany. For a time, Eisenhüttenstadt was even known as Stalinstadt. Nomen est omen. During the Communist era, the city's standard of living was quite high, thanks to its thriving industry. But with the fall of the regime came rising unemployment, and the number of inhabitants fell from 53,000 to 31,000. Today, it's a ghost town... To the west of the canal, around Straße der Republik, lies the planned city. To the east, the oldest part is of lesser interest.
