35 km south of Stralsund, Greifswald (54 000 inhabitants) is another jewel of Hanseatic architecture. She miraculously released war unscathed and is the only remaining Hanseatic city of importance preserved intact. It is also a university city of tradition; she saw birth and study the romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich… We will Find it probably (a little) less charming than Stralsund. The beauty of its ochre, red, blue and white monuments is unquestionable, but the historic city is smaller, less rich and can be the subject of a shorter stay. But if you have not been spoiled by Stralsund and you have the need for more Gothic architecture of brick or pignon houses, a visit is required at all costs.
