Monkey Bay is the largest urban area on the Nankumba Peninsula. It is here that the M/V Ilala, the ferry that serves Likoma and the towns and villages along the lake, begins and ends its journey. The main bus station in the area is also located in Monkey Bay. There are a few shops for refuelling, a pharmacy, petrol stations and cash dispensers. The village is only one stopover as most tourists continue their journey to Cape Maclear.
