About 25 km northwest of Dedza, the Chongoni rock art region is home to nearly 130 sites, including rock paintings by Batwa hunter-gatherers dating back at least 2,000 years. These archaeological sites, listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Humanity in 2006, are totally neglected and far from the traditional tourist routes in Malawi. Despite the lack of infrastructure, some sites such as Chencherere, Nanzeze and Mphunzi can be visited. The Chongoni region covers 126 km² east of the M1.
