The 75 km² of forest reserve is one of the last large areas of forest still protected in Malawi. Part of the reserve is located at an altitude of more than 1,700 m on the Ntchisi mountains, which are home to a wide variety of fauna: vervets, warthogs, (rare) leopards and several species of birds and butterflies. The fauna is not to be outdone since the forest is famous for its orchids (between November and April). Ntchisi, which is a two-hour drive from the capital, has become a favourite destination for Lilongwe residents who come to spend their weekends there.
