Situated on the banks of the Shire River between Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe, Mangochi is one of the country's oldest towns. Formerly Fort Johnston, named after British colonial administrator Harry Johnston, it was an important staging post for the slave trade in the 19th century. When the British arrived, a fort was built in 1891 to prevent the Yao from continuing this disastrous trade. A second fort was built 30 km to the east of the town. Today, Mangochi, a hub of road communications, retains a few old colonial buildings along the Shire, which are falling into disrepair.
