The plateau, whose altitude ranges from 1,500 to nearly 2,100 metres, dominates the city of Zomba. Mixing local and exotic species, like Mexican pines, it is very woody. Peaks, high, in some places, of more than 500 meters, delimit it. Of volcanic origin, the plateau is located on the East African Rift and dominates the Shire Valley, the country's main watercourse. A dam, built in 1999, allows fishing for wild trout. The Zomba plateau is easily accessible by car and offers during the hot season an ideal place to escape the stifling heat of the lowlands. In winter, temperatures drop quickly and it can be quite cold; remember to take warm clothes. Hiking trails allow you to explore the mountain and its wildlife. The panoramic points Queen's View, referring (reverence?) to Queen Elizabeth II of England, and Emperor's View, in homage to Emperor Haile Selassie, offer superb views of the surrounding regions. According to some historical accounts, these two places were among the most beautiful panoramas of the British Empire.
