Being on the slave trade route, Nkhotakata is infamous for being the slave capital of Malawi during the reign of the Jumbe dynasty in the 19th century. More than 20,000 slaves were gathered in the port each year to be taken by ships to Indian Ocean ports, including Kilwa and Zanzibar. Today, Nkhotakota is a city of 35,000 inhabitants that has few historical remains. The church and dispensary of the Sainte-Anne mission, built in 1894 near the giant fig tree, are the only relics of the past. The city is of little interest and the only visitors opt for the lodges on the lake to the south of the city, or those located to the north in the wildlife reserve.
