Located on a high plateau and measuring 1,150 km², the Viphya Forest Reserve, also known as Chikangawa Forest, was established in 1948. It is one of the most important in the country. Two-thirds of the trees (pines, eucalyptus...) on the plateau have been planted for commercial purposes and provide employment for Malawians and essential water for the inhabitants of Mzuzu town and the surrounding area. The rest of the forest has remained indigenous. Hiking and mountain biking tours explore the area, which is dotted with magnificent rocky eminences and rainforest. On the M1 road through the forest, don't miss the incredible Elephant Rock.
