A former prefecture during the British protectorate, Mzimba is now a sleepy, isolated town. Following the emergence of Mzuzu as the capital of the northern region, Mzimba has lost some of its importance, especially as the new M1 road now bypasses it to the east. The town is the cultural capital of the Ngoni people, descendants of the Bantu-speaking peoples of southern Africa who gradually settled throughout sub-Saharan Africa over a journey spanning several millennia. Mzimba is also an important center for tobacco production, which is by far Malawi's main source of foreign currency (53%).
