This forested area has a rich history. The monks set up the first forges in Essarois, Froidvent and Voulaines. By the 18th century, these industries were producing 300 tons a year. Coupled with the cultivation of hemp, this economy flourished until the middle of the 19th century, with a number of large entrepreneurial families. Orders poured in for manor houses, churches and washhouses, such as those designed by the architect Tridon. Don't miss: the church of Saint-Rémy, with its polychrome stone statues, the botanical trail of the Marais des Brosses and the Charmes fountain. On the film front, Pierre Granier-Deferre's Le Train, starring Jean-Louis Trintignant and Romy Schneider, was shot here.
