Laignes is a village of around 660 inhabitants in the north of the Côte-d'Or region, whose motto - "Beau clocher, belles filles, belle fontaine" - attracts heritage enthusiasts. The commune takes its name from the Laigne, the river that runs through it, whose name has no "s" at the end. There are several monuments to visit in the village, including a 16th-century chapel, the remains of a former hospital. The Maison-Dieu tower, the last remnant of the ramparts that once encircled the village, is also noteworthy. Nearby, the Cistercian abbey of Molesme is one of the finest examples of medieval spirituality.
