Bharatpur is the gateway to Chitwan National Park. The large city has a convenient airport to avoid a chaotic drive from Kathmandu or Pokhara. A few small temples or mandirs have been built along the river. Bharatpur lies next to its twin town Narayanghat. They were created after the eradication of malaria in the 1950s. The region was then massively cleared and land was distributed to Nepalese people struggling to survive in the mountains. Nearby, the Mahabharat range, which peaks at 2,000 m at Deochuli, is a sacred mountain for the Magars.
