Perched on a hill to the north-west of Kathmandu, visible from the streets of Thamel, the Buddhist temple of Swayambhunath stands atop a densely forested hill, centered on its stupa. It is one of the valley's oldest and most important places of worship, and one of the main centers of pilgrimage and prayer on special days (such as the anniversary of Buddha's birth). The site is also known as The Monkey Temple (the Nepalese don't like it at all!), due to the presence of entire families of macaques. Pilgrims feed them, and they interact with visitors in a non-aggressive manner. It is of course forbidden to touch them, so be careful when eating your sandwich not to let them steal your food.
