Located 16 km east of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur remains off the main road linking the Nepalese capital to the Chinese border. the "city of devotees" is undoubtedly the royal city that has retained the most character in the Kathmandu Valley. The alleyways of this open-air museum retain a medieval flavour. Its conch shape, one of Vishnu's main attributes, is the result of urban development that began as early as the 8th century, with the joining of the hamlets surrounding the Dattatraya temple, which then formed the heart of the city. When the city became capital between the 14th and 16th centuries, its center of gravity shifted westwards, with the construction of a new royal palace and city walls. Despite the advent of the new Gurkha dynasty, Bhaktapur managed to preserve a certain autonomy and resist the sirens of modernization.Today, the old town is home to a majority of Hindu Newar communities. Bhaktapur is also the "rice village"(Bhadgaon is the city's other name), an agricultural area where peasants divide their time between their land and life in the city.
