Patan is one of the three royal cities of the Kathmandu Valley, also known as Lalitpur. Legend has it that the city owes its name to a farmer named Lalit, who was cured of a skin disease at a spring of pure water south of the Bagmati River, where King Biradeva decided to build a royal city. The city is nicknamed "the city of a thousand temples", such is its rich history. The sites that were badly hit in Patan by the 2015 earthquake have been rebuilt or restored, and some are still underway.Patan is a good alternative to Kathmandu as a place to stay, with plenty of restaurants and stores, less pollution and more authenticity. The Jhamsikhel district is particularly trendy. In the immediate vicinity, a number of pretty 16th-century traditional villages are well worth a visit. We recommend hiring a cab for the day (and negotiating the price).
