Built 5 km east of Kathmandu, on the banks of the Bagmati River, Nepal's most sacred river, it is one of the most important Hindu places of worship, a sacred land imbued with a mystical atmosphere, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is dedicated to Shiva, whose many names include Pashupati, a peaceful herdsman who watches over the kingdom of Nepal. Pashupatinath is an important place of pilgrimage and religious cremation along the Bagmati River. Every spring, sâdhus come from all over Asia to meditate. It can be reached by cab from central Kathmandu (Rs. 400-500), or even on foot from Bodnath.
