Mount Gambier, population 26,700, halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne, is South Australia's second-largest city and the Limestone Coast's largest. It's a popular stopover for motorists who have opted for the coastal route. Its town center is classic and pleasant, but its limestone caves and Blue Lake are real tourist attractions. In addition to tourism, the town's economy is based on timber and vine growing. Following the road from Mount Gambier, you leave the state of South Australia and enter Victoria, joining the Great Ocean Road, which runs along the coast to Melbourne.
