Located 700 kilometers north of Sydney, Tenterfield, population 4,000, is the gateway to major national parks such as Bald Rock, home to one of Australia's largest monoliths, Boonoo Boonoo, with its spectacular 250-meter waterfalls, and Gibraltar Range. Tenterfield is also the town where the first formulation of a federal scheme for Australia was made. The speech of October 24, 1899 by Sir Henry Parkes, then Premier of New South Wales, is known as the Federation Speech. Finally, Tenterfield is the birthplace of the singer Peter Allen, 1944-1992, to whom Claude François owes his hit "Je vais à Rio".
