Casino is named after the Italian town of Cassino. The land purchased along the Richmond River in the late 1830s was named by two ranchers. Today, with a population of approximately 12,000, Casino is a thriving rural center that relies heavily on the cattle industry combined with the local timber industry. Casino is also known as "The Beef Capital" and holds a large livestock fair each May. There are many interesting historic buildings, especially on Walker and Barker Streets, ranging from the Victorian era to the Art Deco era of the 1930s.
