Located just over 800 kilometers north of Sydney and just over 100 kilometers south of Brisbane, Tweed Heads is the northernmost coastal town in New South Wales. It is twinned with its Queensland neighbor, Coolangatta. Much of its population is employed in tourism. This is the city's major activity, not least because of its proximity to the Gold Coast (a very large city in the Queensland region, offering numerous beaches and surf spots). The Tweed River is the main waterway running south from Tweed Heads.
