Ballina is located on the Pacific Highway, 750 km north of Sydney and 32 km south of Byron Bay. The town was founded in the 1840s on the north bank of the Richmond River, which was a major shipping river for about 100 years. Although the city has little charm, it enjoys a subtropical climate that is conducive to water sports and recreation and attracts a large tourist population. Its beaches are beautiful and surfing is very popular. The Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum is the major attraction in the downtown area and is located next to the visitor center.
