Mullumbimby, whose name means "little round hill", is located on unceded Bundjalung Nation land. The town grew out of a camp set up by settlers at the junction of two branches of the Brunswick River in the 1850s. The site soon became a center for the lumber industry, especially red cedar, which was collected in large quantities throughout the region. The river played an important role in the transportation of timber from the cutting and gathering points to its mouth at Brunswick Heads. From Nimbin or Lismore, it is a pleasant drive into town on the Coolamon Scenic Drive.
