This town of 900 inhabitants is located on the banks of the Tina Mayor river, at the mouth of the Deba river. It is famous for its production of "Corbatas de Unquera", a pastry made with puff pastry that you can find in any bakery in the area. Unlike many localities in the area with medieval origins, Unquera probably developed much later, even though there had been a population center for a long time. It was with the rise of the railroad in the nineteenth century, and the opening of a road through the area a little later, that the village found itself on the commercial routes of the north of the country.
