A summer resort, San Vicente de la Barquera is built at the bottom of an estuary that can be crossed by the Maza bridge. The town was founded in the thirteenth century by King Alfonso VIII and preserves some beautiful medieval remains perched on a rocky outcrop surrounded by walls. An ancient fortress from the thirteenth century stands here, along with the sturdy parish church of Santa María de los Angeles. From the square, the street is lost between the green valley and the port with its typical boats that give the town its name. The town is famous for its gastronomy, including sorropotún, a tuna casserole with tomatoes and potatoes. If you have more time, stop by the Punta de la Silla lighthouse and the La Barquera sanctuary. In addition to the many accommodations in San Vicente, it is also possible to stay in the campsites of the Oyambre Natural Park.
