The Mamshit site was once the Nabataean city of Memphis. It is one of the four cities in the Negev that were on the caravan road between Arabia and Gaza Harbour, to which UNESCO gave the World Heritage site status in 2005. The other three cities are Haluza, Shivta and Avdat. Mamshit is the smallest but one of the best restored.
