Hjørring is the old capital of the Vendsyssel region, a charter already existed in 1243. Nevertheless, the churches of St. Hans and St. Olai are earlier and date from the 12th century, when its name is mentioned in a bracteate (a metal medal). The name, of uncertain origin, has as its root Hjórr meaning sword! Unlike many other settlements, Hjørring's fortune does not come from the sea, but from its position as a crossroads between several important cities. Originally crossed by a small stream called Strømmen which gave its name to Strømgade, the main pedestrian street.
