Svaneke, "swan" in Danish, is a town on the east coast of the island, and one of the most beautiful. Its ancient origins are attested to by the discovery of pre-Viking artifacts, gold votive plates (Sorte Muld amulets). The port was known in the 12th century, and grew steadily over the centuries until it was frequented by the prosperous Hanseatic merchants, especially from August to October during the herring fishery. Its narrow streets and its well-preserved half-timbered houses (with one level, a hipped roof and a basalt base) make it the most beautiful village on the island, according to its inhabitants.
