In the Middle Ages, Simrishamn was an important centre for herring trade and fishing. From that time, the city has preserved its paved central streets lined with houses, dating back to the time when Skåne belonged to Denmark. In 1749, Carl von Linné visited Simrishamn, and the farm where he stayed in Kockska Gården has been preserved since then. The boldness of the plaster colour manifests itself in a wide variety of tones, from immaculate white to purple, Iroquois blue, pastel green, pale pink and sunny yellow. The shopping street Storgatan, partly pedestrian, gently descends towards the port. You can admire the church of Saint-Nicolai, the oldest parts of which date back to the 12th century. The sculptures in front of the church are the work of Carl Milles.
