Known as the garden city, Rønne is not lacking in charm. Its open harbor like a conch shell, its slender church, its half-timbered houses behind which are hidden gardens perfuming the air with the sweet scent of lilacs and its admirably rehabilitated heritage give it a crazy charm. The most important city on the island, it was heavily damaged in May 1945. While the rest of Denmark was liberated from the German occupation, it served as a last retreat for the soldiers returning from the Eastern Front. It was bombed by the Russians. The reconstruction was done with red wooden houses that had been offered by the Swedes.
