Located southwest of Sayaxche, Dos Pilas is set in a tropical rainforest declared a protected area. The city, which seems to have been governed by rulers at war with the main cities of the region, is worth a visit for its sculptures and, above all, its masterly staircase, decorated with well-preserved hieroglyphs. In addition, several caves have been discovered in the area, such as the Cueva del Duende, the Cueva de la Sangre and the Cueva del Murciélago. The site is particularly difficult to access, so only archaeology enthusiasts will venture there. To do this, it is advisable to ask for advice to the INGUAT of Flores.
