A typical city in the Transcarpathian region with a multi-ethnic and multicultural history, Mukacheve is a pleasant centre with 90,000 inhabitants, 10% of whom are Hungarians. First mentioned in 1086 in ancient chronicles, Mukacheve displays the traces of its Austro-Hungarian past in its pretty historic centre, even if the city is mainly known for its imposing castle. For a long time, Mukacheve and Uzhgorod fought for the title of economic and political centre of the region, but Uzhgorod won thanks to its geographical proximity to the other capitals. Apart from Ukrainians and Hungarians, a large Jewish community has also lived in Mukacheve since the mid-seventeenth century, it was exterminated during the Second World War. Every year, from 12 to 15 January, the Chervone Vino red wine festival takes place, with the participation of many winegrowers. At the end of the festival, the best wine receives a prize.
