After having represented Burgundy's wines for twenty years, Yvonnick Debray bought a vineyard in 2006. The 1,000 m2-fermenting room and cellars are situated in the heart of Beaune, at a stone's throw from the hospices. Between properties and marketing grapes from a reasoned culture, it is the equivalent of 20 hectares of vineyards, spread over Côte de Nuits and Beaune that are transformed. The wine-making is entrusted to Jean-Philippe Terreau, a cellar master whose experience guarantees the elaboration of quality wines.

The typicality of each area is respected, and it is as many whites as reds that are offered. The whites range from Aligoté to Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru through Mercurey, Savigny, Meursault or Chassagne-Montrachet. The range of the reds stretches from Gevrey-Chambertin to Santenay. A special mention for Clos Vougeot Grand Cru. The tasting room is very comfortable; it has a unique marble spittoon! The reception is very friendly. Upon reservation for groups, tasting meals can be organised.

Exceptional visit to Domaine Debray, a small-production winery right in the heart of Beaune, Burgundy. In a region with so much history it’s fascinating that as recently as 2006 Yvonnick Debray, who spent years in wine distribution bought the estate —along with vineyards from six of the 33 Burgundian Grand Cru appellations. Our guide for the tour was Hector, who has also been the lead winemaker for the last six years. He’s charming, knowledgeable, speaks perfect English, and made our group of 20 feel completely at home. He walked us through the whole winemaking process—from grape sorting to barreling to bottling—and shared how they focus on manual harvesting and integrated farming to honor the region’s traditions. We tasted a fantastic lineup, including several Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines. I especially loved their Corton-Charlemagne and Clos de Vougeot, freshly bottled and just outstanding. The Vosne-Romanée was also a hit with the group—amazing quality for the price—and I can’t wait for the delivery of the 2023 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru I ordered.
If you’re into wine—or just want a great Burgundy experience—this place is well worth the stop.
