Thurso is the northernmost city on the island of Great Britain. Formerly a major Norse port, which earned it its name "Thor's River", it has always maintained a strong maritime activity, particularly commercial with northern Europe until the 19th century. Today, it is towards the Orkney Islands that its attention has turned, being the main point of departure towards this sublime archipelago. Ferries leave from Scrabster, on the other side of the bay. The ruins east of the River Thurso are those of Thurso Castle, built in 1872. In the immediate vicinity of Thurso, the Castle of Mey is a site to discover.
