At the northeastern tip of the country, John O'Groats jealously guards its reputation as the last land in Scotland, yet it belongs to Dunnet Head. It's named after Jan de Groot, a Dutchman who once chartered the ferry to Orkney. Explore Duncansby Head and its cliffs, 3 km further east. The Duncansby Stacks are real rocky peaks with atypical shapes. From the lighthouse, walk 1 km south to see them. 8 km down the road, via the A99, you can also see the ruins of Bucholie Castle, perched above the sea. By bus, John O'Groats is 30 minutes from Wick on the Stagecoach 77 and X97 services and 1 hour from Thurso on the 80.
