Halfway between Orkney and Shetland, Fair Isle is a small island (768 ha) of immense interest. Known for its traditional sweater-making and its birds, this piece of land among the most isolated in Great Britain is the domain of an exceptional ornithological fauna. Some 350 different species can be seen here, including over 20,000 puffins and beautiful colonies of Arctic terns. It is a major crossroads for a large number of migrants, unusual or even stray, coming from the four corners of the globe: passerines, crimson finches, crossbills. Fair Isle can be reached by a 2h30 ferry ride from Lerwick (Mainland).
