The eastern part of Mainland is actually made up of several islands, which were attached following a tragic event. On October 14, 1939, the ship HMS Royal Oak was sunk at Scapa Flow by a U-boat submarine that managed to enter the bay, resulting in the death of 833 men. Winston Churchill ordered the construction of dykes and causeways between South Ronaldsay, Burray and Mainland to block all access. Known as the Churchill Barriers, they have since been covered with roads to facilitate traffic. Like the west, the area offers beautiful natural scenery and important prehistoric remains.
