Founded in 1788 as a fishing port, Ullapool is the main village for dozens and dozens of miles along the beautiful west coast of the Highlands. Completely isolated in the heart of endless wilderness, it is an excellent base for exploring the area and spending a night before continuing north or south. Its white cottages line the shore of Loch Broom in a grid pattern, reflecting the tops of fairy-tale mountains and the hulls of small boats. This is one of the most picturesque spots you could hope for and the accommodation on offer is interesting, as are the local pubs. Ferries depart from Ullapool to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides.
