If you've ever heard of Carrickmacross, it's probably linked to the lace that bears its name. This bustling market town on the N2 road grew up around a castle built by the Earl of Essex in 1630, which has been home to the convent of the Sisters of St. Louis since the 19th century. Not far away is Inniskeen, the birthplace of Irish poet and novelist Patrick Kavanagh (1904-1967). Surrounded by lakes and hills, this village inspired many of his works. Although he spent much of his life in Dublin, Kavanagh loved more than anything the "stony gray soil" of his childhood playground.
